| The Bristling Wood - Katherine Kerr - Things are starting to get really interesting. These four books are more like a single book in four bindings. The time-switching was a little annoying in this one, because I couldn't tell easily what was happening in which summer (1063 or 1064). I jumped right into the next one right away! | I have been very remiss in updating this blog. The last entry is from September. Life keeps chugging along and I have been super busy with four different jobs (all part-time). I am having fun for the most part, but life can get somewhat stressful. I am taking better care of my health, and I'm liking the results so far. Just gotta keep making these changes habit forming. I really miss my family and friends from the USA, but I am blessed with many good friends here in Argentina.
I promise I will write a more thorough update soon, but in the interim, here is a list of what I think qualify as my best shots from 2009. I hope you take the time to click through to the larger images. This was harder to compile than I thought.

| I like Moleskines, but they're expensive for something made in China. The Picadilly notebooks that I'm trying out as a substitute do not seem to have very good elastic. I find these intriguing: http://www.ecosystemlife.com/Made in the USA, of 100% recycled -- and recyclable -- materials, by a subsidiary of Barnes & Noble. Comparable price to Moleskines. I've got a set of smaller lined ones, and we'll see how they go. This entry was originally posted at http://redrose.dreamwidth.org/115235.html. Please comment there using OpenID. | |

| Thale's Folly - Dorothy Gilman - a sweet sort-of mystery, and nice light reading. Letting it go on bookmooch. The Water-Nymph - Michele Jaffe - a romance novel with a bit of mystery in it. Liked it better than her previous (The Stargazer). Would have preferred more mystery and less romance. Also letting this one go. | Nikon D700 Sigma 50mm f1.4 EX DG HSM ISO 200 F2, 1/400 secondAndrea needed an updated headshot for some upcoming auditions. Her acting teachers at Otterbein said she'd do well with one that shows her as "sexy/funny," as she's often cast that way for shows. After long deliberation with her friends from school, this was the universal winner of all the shots we took this day. However, I had to do a significant amount of editing work on this particular photo. This was one of the "in between shots," and Andrea was wearing a purple glove on her hand behind her head. I did my best to remove it and smooth things out, but I may revisit this image when I have some time in the next few weeks. ( more ) | |

| The Celtic Tiger isn't really doing that well as it used to... but the new Medieval blasphemy law is just unbelievable. How can you be sure any given quote does not offend anyone from any religion? "From today, 1 January 2010, the new Irish blasphemy law becomes operational, and we begin our campaign to have it repealed. Blasphemy is now a crime punishable by a €25,000 fine. The new law defines blasphemy as publishing or uttering matter that is grossly abusive or insulting in relation to matters held sacred by any religion, thereby intentionally causing outrage among a substantial number of adherents of that religion,Pasta ads and product placements in the supermarkets can surely be blasphemous to Pastafarians... Any fundie anything can surely find whatever is beneficial to them be blasphemous when it suits them. How about nonreligious people's rights? Being shoveled (ANY) religion in school that one's parents chose the child to be taught to until one is old enough to remove themselves from any such religion's registry? The religions as far as I've seen tend to be blasphemous against all other religions and nonbelievers... Anyway. Good time to not be in Ireland any more. | |

| Nikon D700 Sigma 50mm f1.4 EX DG HSM ISO 3200 F2.2, 1/40 secondAndrea and I were pretty excited about the ham at the house party tonight. Little did we know that it would be the only real meat this holiday season. Every gathering we went to afterward decided to serve clam chowder as the main course. Is this some kind of holiday tradition I'm unaware of? | |

| Nikon D700 Nikkor 70-200mm f2.8G VR ISO 1600 F2.8, 1/160 secondAndrea's friend from Otterbein, Caitlin, put on a Cabaret show downtown to help fund her unpaid internship at NBC studios. She'll be Tina Fey's casting assistant, working on 30 Rock this winter. They performed Anything You Can Do as a duet. | |

| Nikon D700 Sigma 50mm f1.4 EX DG HSM ISO 640 F1.8, 1/100 secondPamela needed some headshots taken for an upcoming audition. I don't really know a lot of good spots out here for portraits yet, but she suggested Mt. Tabor Park and that seemed to work out really well. After a couple hundred headshots, we walked around for a bit and took some casual portraits before parting ways. This was definitely my favorite. | |

| Writing a Woman's Life - Carolyn Heilbrun - a very interesting book which examines how women's lives are constructed in biography. A definite re-read, and well worth reading. | The Stargazer - Michele Jaffe - a romance novel with a mystery subplot, when I was hoping for the reverse. Not bad, but will not be keeping. Tunnel Vision - Sara Paretsky - another V.I. book. I need to lay off these for a while. Otherwise, very good. Castle - David Macauley - fun read. Not as cool as the mill book, since it lacked the mechanical equipment. | Perfect type of xmas: Eat out at a crab place yesterday, and eat out some pho today. Yay for Asian places that are open on 25th. And extra yay for Asian groceries that are open on 25th too. Then add just a huge pile of books and lots of James Bond movies. | |
